What are Small Hydro Plants

Small Hydro Plants (Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas – PCHs) s) are hydroelectric power plants that are reduced in size according to the classification of the National Electric Energy Agency in Brazil (Aneel). Currently, these developments range between 3 and 30 megawatts (MW) of installed power with a reservoir of up to 13 km² of area. Despite the name, which carries the misleading word “small”, Small Hydros are today responsible for approximately 3.3% of all the installed capacity in Brazil.
